These men, who had sacrificed so much for the country, faced racist attacks in 1946 as they laid the groundwork for the civil rights movement to come. The pride and humiliations of the Black war experience grew the membership rolls of the NAACP, whose ranks grew tenfold from 50,000 in 1940 to 450,000 in 1946.

In recognition of Labor Day 2021, NAACP is hosting a Labor Week of Action through September 9, 2021. Throughout the week of activities, we are celebrating and recognizing the historic role of Black workers in advocating for workers’ rights and supporting a robust economy.

Join us this Labor Week of Action for a series of events that bring together elected officials, union leaders, and civil rights change-makers and activists. We’ll be providing advocacy framework and solutions for implementing a jobs plan that prioritizes the needs of Black workers, while also addressing long-standing issues around the racial wealth gap and systemic racism within the trade and various other employment industries.
